What are the rules?
1. Use quotation marks before and after a direct quote of someone.
"I need to order a lunch," said William.
Sarah exclaimed, "I love surprises!"
2. Put quotation marks around the titles of songs, poems, articles, and short stories.
The song, "Lean on Me" was playing at their house.
3. Any punctuation goes to the left of the quotation mark.
"It is time for recess," whispered Dave.
4. Use single quotation marks for quotations within quotations.
"Have you ever read the poem, 'The Flight' ", asked Kate.
