Critical Question: How can I make smooth transitions in my writing?
Task: The students will be able to identify "red flags" in writing, and then fix them with more creative transitions.
One way to move stories along while writing is to use transitional words and phrases instead of the words "then" and "next". These words can be called "red flags". There purpose is to alert the reader that the story is changing, such as a significant event or surprising discovery. Here are some examples of "red flags".
Red Flags
A moment later......
Before I knew it......
In the blink of an eye......
All of the sudden.......
Just as I realized......
The next thing I knew......
Suddenly......
