Critical Question: What are verbs and the different types of verbs?

Task: Students will be able to identify the different types of verbs and how to use them properly.

 

Verb: a word that shows action

 

Types of Verbs:

Present Tense Verbs: tells what is happening right now

example:

The sun shines brightly over the lake.

A deer watches from the nearby forest.

 

Past Tense Verbs: tells what already happened (by adding ed or d)

example:

The sun shined brightly over the lake.

The deer watched from the nearby forest.

 

Future Tense Verbs: tells what is going to happen (add will or shall to the verb)

example:

Corby will try to do a magic trick.

Branton will dance after school today.

 

Irregular Verbs: shows what will happen in the past by using a specific form

example:

The kids wrote home to their parents about camp.

The spaceship flew out of sight.

 

Action Verbs: shows action

example:

Katelynn screamed when she saw the ant.

Sue is cooking dinner.

 

 

Linking Verbs: make statements or they express relationships and links

example statements:

He is a nice person.

She is very funny.

 

example relationships/links:

She is my sister.

That man is my teacher.

 

Some example linking verbs:

am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, will be, shall be, may be
