![]()
Critical Question: What is the five step writing process and how do I use it?
Task: The students will be introduced to the writing process and complete an assignment using this process.
The class will continue to use this system in the rest of the writing.
1. Brainstorming
2. Rough Draft
3. Edit
4. Peer Edit
5. Final Copy
Five Simple Steps- It's that easy!
Step 1- Brainstorming
In this step you can begin the think, or brainstorm, about your topic. Use a graphic organizer, such as a
"spider" to organize your thoughts on paper. Just write down anything that comes to mind, you may or may not
use it later. The purpose of this step is to get you thinking about your topic and organize these thoughts on paper
to prepare to write!
Step 2- Rough Draft
Here you will begin writing your ideas down into a 5 paragraph format. Please remember to skip every other line
when writing so that it is east to come back later and edit your work. This writing should just be a rough sketch of
what you want to say, it is not your final copy.
Step 3- Edit
In this step you will read your paper again and edit your work. This means that you should look for misspellings,
grammar mistakes, capitalization errors and so on. You will try and fix your rough draft so that it is your best work.
Editing takes place right on your rough draft.
Step 4- Peer Edit
Next you will take your edited paper to your peer to read and review it. You and your peer should read it together and
discuss your writing. Your peer may have some ideas for your writing that will help. This is the last step to creating a
well writing paper.
Step 5- Final Draft
This is the final step in the writing process. Here you will write the final copy of your paper on nice white paper.
This copy should have no mistakes and would reflect your best writing.
