About the story |
In 1899 Calpurnia Tate was an 11 year-old girl interested in science. Her grandfather was a devoted naturalist and helped her explore the world around them. She learned to record all the interesting and not so interesting things she saw in nature. She also helped him document -what they thought was- a new species of plant and send the evidence to the Smithsonian Institute. Unfortunately for Callie, she is a girl in 1899 and her mother feels that learning how to be a housewife is much more important than learning about nature. But Callie and her mother discover that she is much better at science, than cooking and sewing. |
My opinion |
This was a wonderful story that explored what is was like for girls at the turn of the century and showed us Callie and her grandfather's scientific exploration. This would be a great book to read when studying Darwin and classification. |
