About the story

English Rangers attack Saxso's Abenaki village during the French and Indian War. During the raid Saxso and his mother and sisters and separated and his mother and sisters are taken captive. Angry with himself that he did not protect them properly, Saxso sets off on his own to try and find them. Will one 14-year-old boy be able to rescue the captives and return them to what is left of their peaceful village?

My opinion

Told through the Native American perspective, this is a wonderful story with insights into the world of the Abenaki and how they were viewed and treated by the Europeans.

About the story

The bearwalker legend has always frightened Baron, can an evil human really turn into a bear? His Indian heritage leads him to believe anything is possible. However, it had always been just a legend, until Baron's class trip to outdoor school gives him a reason to believe.

My opinion

A fast-paced mystery and Native American legend come to life. Once again Mr. Bruchac has delivered an excellent tale.
