About the story |
It’s 1975 and HÀ is a ten-year-old living with her mother and brothers in Saigon where she understands the culture and the language and where every thing is familiar. However, like many of the Vietnamese, she and her family are forced to flee the country as Saigon falls. They board a ship with many other families hoping to find safety in America. When they reach America, HÀ discovers that maybe wartime in Vietnam wasn’t so terrible. As the family tries to settle in Alabama, HÀ is having trouble learning the new language, understanding the new culture and making sense of this new strange environment. Will HÀ and her family ever really feel comfortable in their new country? |
My opinion |
Told in free verse, like a journal entry, HÀ gives us a glimpse of what it’s like trying to adapt to a new life so completely different from the one she has always known. A very moving story based on the author’s own transition from one culture to another. |
