About the story |
Abilene has been riding the rails with her father for most of her 12 years. So, why has he sent her to Manifest, Kansas to spend the summer of 1936 with a former bootlegger turned pastor? Her first night in town she finds a keepsake box under the floorboards and uncovers several trinkets and old letters from a WWI soldier sent to a boy named Jinx. Abilene and her new friends try to uncover the mystery of the spy that the letters hint exists in town. During their search Abilene and the readers are given a detailed account of the town in 1917-1918 as told through an aging Hungarian Gypsy. Will the girls ever uncover the name of the ‘Rattler’ and will Abilene finally understand why her father sent her there in the first place? |
My opinion |
An extremely well written story which will transport the reader back to the times when bootleggers, powerful coal mine operators, the Ku Klux Klan, a country at war and life during the depression era are told about in the present tense. The 2011 Newbury Medal Winner. |
