Question: Mafatu has shown several acts of courage since he left Hikureru. What new act of courage did he do during chapter 4?
Answer: When Mafatu dove into the water to attack the shark, he showed a great deal of courage. When he lived on Hikureru he barely ventured out onto the water. Now he not only fearlessly traveled about the lagoon on his raft, he fought with the large shark in order to protect his dog Uri. He has become a much braver young man than he used to be.

'Caution is the better part of wisdom.' (page 65). What does this phrase mean? When has it applied to your life?
Answer:
Yes, caution is the better part of wisdom. I often think I know what I'm doing, but unless I stop and think before I act, I usually create a problem.
For example, every day I drive the same way to work. Most of my route passes by serene fields and woods. I enjoy the ride and often think of all the fun things that will happen at school. Well, one day my daydreaming lead to disaster. Rather than being cautious, I was appreciating the amazing sunrise. The horizon was ablaze with pink, red and orange. Awesome!
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a herd of deer springing across the field and heading towards the road. I slammed on my breaks to avoid them, but it was too late. One of the deer collided with the front of my car. I pulled over as it staggered to the side of the road. The poor deer. What had I done?
A truck pulled up behind me and the driver came up to me. After asking if I was OK, he inquired about what had happened. I told him what I'd done. He gave me several suggestions of what to do and I followed his advice. When I got to work, I called my husband and told him what had happened. He went to the field, but the deer was gone.
My hope is that the deer was merely stunned and was able to rejoin his herd. Regardless of the outcome for the deer, I now drive more cautiously every day as I come to work. Caution is the better part of wisdom.
