A wide variety of writing experiences are incorporated into each of our projects. Our students develop informative, narrative, and persuasive writing skills as a natural outcome of the scope of their project challenges throughout the year.

Our journal assignments give students additional opportunities to develop their writing skills. By the end of the year, each student creates a journal filled with reflections on their lives as fifth/sixth graders, essays related to inspirational quotes, short stories related to project themes, poems, and more. Narrative, informative, and persuasive writing skills are incorporated into the journal assignments throughout the year.

In order to expand our students' writing skills, we spend time each week in a "Writer's Workshop." During these writing experiences, we expose students to a variety of writing techniques. Grammar, spelling, and vocabulary lessons are also incorporated into these workshops in an individualized manner.
Regardless of the type of writing that the students do, we emphasize the idea that writing is a process. Prewriting, writing, revising and publishing are the four steps the students are guided through on their way to producing a finished piece of writing.
