 The Rule:

- ible

If the root word is not a complete word, add -ible.

- able

If the root is a complete word, add -able.

If the root is a complete word ending in -e, drop the final -e and add -able.

aud + ible = audible

Examples:

* visible

* horrible

* terrible

accept + able = acceptable

Examples:

* fashionable

* laughable

* suitable

excuse - e+ able = excusable

Examples:

* advisable

* desirable

* valuable

Some Exceptions:

* contemptible

* digestible

* flexible

* responsible

* irritable

* inevitable

1. Practice the Rule:
Print off http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_spelibleEX1.html and complete the exercises.

2. Definitions:

Pick 5 -ible words and 5 -able words to look up in a dictionary. Write the word, part of speech, and definition for your 10 words.

3. Sentences:

Put each of your -ible and -able words into a grammatically correct sentence that shows that you understand the meaning of the word.

4. Spelling Test:

Use our spelling method to practice spelling your 10 words. Be ready for a test at the end of the week.

5. Turn in your work by Friday. Your packet should include your practice exercises, definitions, sentences, and spelling test.
