1. What's a contraction?

The word contract means to squeeze together and make smaller. A contraction is a word made of two words that are put together and then made shorter.

For example: can + not = can't and are + not = aren't

The ' (apostrophe) takes the place of letters that are taken out of the word. In the contraction can't, the ' takes the place of the letters n and o. See: can not = can't

2. Not Contractions

Go to http://www.mcwdn.org/contract/not/not.html and memorize the spelling of all the 'not ' contraction words. Then print off and take the quiz.

3. Am, Is, Are Contractions

Go to http://www.mcwdn.org/contract/amisare/amisare.html and memorize the spelling of the 'am,' 'is,' 'are' contraction words. The print off and take the quiz.

4. Have - Has Contractions

Go to http://www.mcwdn.org/contract/havehas/havehas.html and memorize the spelling of the 'have' and 'has' contraction words. Then print off and take the quiz.

5. Had Contractions

Go to http://www.mcwdn.org/contract/had/had.html and memorize the spelling of the 'had' contraction words. Then print off and take the quiz.

6. Sentences:

Next, write 12 sentences using 12 different contractions. Make sure your sentences show that you understand the meaning of the contraction.

7. Turn in your work by Thursday. Your packet should include your 4 quizzes and 12 sentences.

8. Corrections

Make any corrections to your quizzes and sentences. Your final packet is due on Monday.

9. Spelling Test

Be ready for a spelling test on contractions on Monday.
