Doubling Rule

 The Rule:

When a multi-syllable word ends in a consonant preceded by one vowel, and the final syllable is accented, double the final consonant.
 control--controlled

prefer--preferred

begin--beginning

 When the final syllable does not have the end-accent, do not double the consonant. 

focus--focused

pardon--pardoned

trumpet--trumpeted

gallop--galloped

Your Assignments:

1. Definitions:
Pick 5 words that follow rule 1 and 5 words that follow rule 2. Look your words up in a dictionary. Write the word, part of speech, and definition for your each of your10 words.

2. Sentences:

Put each of your -ible and -able words into a grammatically correct sentence that shows that you understand the meaning of the word.

3. Spelling Test:

Use our spelling method to practice spelling your 10 words. Be ready for a test at the end of the week.

4. Turn in your work by Friday. Your packet should include your definitions, sentences, and spelling test.
