Adding - ly
 The Rule:
Adding the letters ly to a word or word part makes the word an adverb.
Rule 1: add ly to most words
quick + ly = quickly     time + ly = timely

Rule 2: if the word ends in a consonant plus le, change the e to y

able + ly = ably     gentle + ly = gently

Rule 3: if the word ends in y, change y to i and add ly

crazy + ly = crazily     hasty + ly = hastily

Rule 4: words that end in ic and ical become ically when you add ly

logical + ly = logically

1. Practice
Print off and complete the exercise found at: http://archon.educ.kent.edu/Midwest/Materials/ndakota/spelling/exercise7.html.

2. Word List:

Write down 3 root words that follow rule 1, 3 root words that follow rule 2, 3 root words that follow rule 3, and 3 root words that follow rule 4. Now add ly to each of your words. Be sure to follow the spelling rules.

3. Sentences:

Put each of your - ly words into grammatically correct sentences.

4. Spelling Test:

Use our spelling method to practice spelling your 12 words. Be ready for a test at the end of the week.

5. Turn in your work by Friday. Your packet should include your practice exercises, word list, sentences, and spelling test.
