Math Expectations
Textbook:
Prentice Hall: Course 3 Mathematics
We will cover the following material:
Chapter 1: Statistical Display Chapter 5: Rational and Irrational Numbers Chapter 9: Geometry and Measurement Chapter 2: Integers and Variable Expressions Chapter 6:Applications of Proportions Chapter 10: Functions and Polynomials Chapter 3: Equations and Inequalities Chapter 7: Application of Percents Chapter 11: Probability Chapter 4: Graphing in the Coordinate Plane Chapter 8: Patterns in Geometry
Notebooks:
Students are required to keep and maintain a notebook dedicated to math.
In their math notebooks students are required to title the chapter and section they are working on. Students will also subtitle each part of the section i.e. Check Skills, Notes, and Check Understanding.
Homework assignments are to be completed on the next clean sheet of paper in the notebook.
Students should include their name, the date, and assignment at the top of the page.
When working each problem students must show all work and steps in the manner described by the book or by the teacher. Students must check each answer whenever possible and attempt to correct mistakes.
All work is to be done in pencil.
Class Period:
We will begin most classes by checking the previous night's homework and going over any questions students may have concerning the material.
To review and check readiness, students will complete the Check Skills Questions at the beginning of the next section and check their answers in the Instant Check section in the back of the text book.
I will then introduce and teach the concepts in the next section. Students will take notes on the material covered.
Students will then complete the Check Understanding questions within the section, check their answers, and correct if necessary.
If time permits, students will begin the next assignment.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned each day except Friday. Students are expected to spend up to thirty minutes on assignments.
Exercises at the end of the each section are typically assigned for homework. The assigned exercises cover the concepts taught during that day's class period. Additionally, some Exercise problems will review previously covered material.
Students must show all work and steps in the manner described by the book or by the teacher. Students must check answers in the back of the book whenever possible and correct all mistakes
In order for an assignment to be considered complete it must be titled with all work shown and answers corrected as described above.
Assignments will be checked for completeness. Assignments will be collected and graded periodically.
If having difficulty understanding part of an assignment, students should use all available resources (notes, textbook, worksheets) to assist them. If still unable to understand a problem or concept the student should meet with me first thing in the morning and be prepared to ask specific questions about how to interpret or solve a problem.
Assessment:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the material within the chapter by taking two in-class Checkpoint quizzes per chapter.
If an understanding of the concepts and procedures for solving problems is not demonstrated on a quiz, I will work one-on-one with that student to ensure they learn the material. Our of class time may be used for this purpose.
Once a chapter is completed students will complete the Chapter Review problems and then take an in-class Chapter Test.
Chapter Tests:
Students will take Chapter Test Form A.
After taking the Chapter Test, tests will be corrected and returned to the students who will have an opportunity to make corrections. Half credit will be given for questions answered correctly on this second attempt.
If a student does not score proficient on the Chapter Test (>75%) I will work one-on-one with that student to ensure they relearn the material. Our of class time may be used for this purpose. They will then take Chapter Test Form B. Their score will reflect the average of the two test scores.
Communication:
Assignments will be posted daily on my math assignment calendar.
Parent/guardian will be contacted when a student fails to complete an assignment.
I will e-mail periodic updates on class's or individual student progress. I will send e-mails informing parent/guardians of upcoming tests so you can help prepare your child.
Assessments will be sent home quarterly. Two copies will be sent home in Friday Folders. One copy needs to be signed and returned for school records while the other can be kept for home records. Assessments can be sent home electronically upon request.
Parents or guardians will be informed if their child misses a homework assignment.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to contact me with any questions or concerns.
