These are the steps you need to follow when writing your article.

 

 

1. Choose a topic

Your topic should be specific.

For example, if you write an article for our Nature Section, your topic would not be: Siberian Tiger, but more focused like: Saving the Siberian Tiger or Disappearing Habitat of the Siberian Tiger.

Your topic should tell us exactly what your article is about.

Get your topic approved!

If you cannot choose a focused topic in a reasonable amount of time a topic will be assigned to you. 


2. Research your topic

Use your favorite search engines or one of the following news agencies to search for information.

 Centre Daily TimesNew York TimesNPRYou may need to prepare interview quesitons and interview staff or students.

Be prepared to fill out your organizer:

  • Answer the key questions: the five W's. Look for interesting facts.Find information that can be quoted.
  • Record your resources.  
3. Organize your news article

Before you write your article you must fill out the Organizing Your News Article form. This can be done on paper or in a Word Document.

Don't forget, your first sentence or two is your Lead and must contain the information for the five W's. This is the introductory paragraph of your news article.

4. Write your article

You should already have all the information you need.

Your Lead has already been written. Your next paragraph or two should tell the rest of the story.

Use your Supporting Facts and Quotes to give the reader further details. Make your article interesting and informational.

Stay on topic. Always keep in mind the purpose of your article, the topic, and stick to it.
