State Team's Question

State Hypothesis

Your team should now have a research question. The next step is to develop an hypothesis which will help guide your research. Your hypothesis should state what you think will happen in your experiment. Refer to classroom discussion and the examples below for more information.

Hypothesis Examples

Identify Variables

As you develop your hypothesis, you must also identify the independent and dependent variables. You should also be able to identify any extraneous variables that might influence the outcome of your experiment. Refer to class discussion for more information.

  • Independent Variable(s) - the variable or variables that you manipulate.
  • Dependent Variable(s) - the variable or variables that you measure and change depending upon the independent variable or variables.
  • Extraneous Variable(s) - these are variables that may influence the outcome of the experiment. As a scientist, you must do whatever you can to control the influence of extraneous variables.

Support Your Hypothesis

In order to convince people that your research is based on a solid scientific foundation, you need to explain why you believe your hypothesis is correct. To do this, you need to find research articles and information that support your hypothesis. Refer to class discussion for more information
