In Defense of Newton

For several years, a rebel group has been petitioning the Supreme Court of Motion, Machines and Energy (the SCMME) to overturn Newton's Laws of Motion and execute Newton for improper and incorrect thinking. Due to civil unrest, and boredom, the SCMME decides to follow up on the rebels petition and officially charge Newton with scurrilous and lewd philosophical speculation. As a public defense lawyer, you have been assigned by the SCMME to represent and defend Newton and his first three laws against the charge of scurrilous and lewd philosophical speculation.

In order to clear Newton's good name, you must prove that Newton's laws are indeed laws and not the ramblings of a scurrilous and lewd philosopher.

Although you may present your defense in any way that you see fit, the court has specifically asked that you provide the following information.

  1. When it comes to science, describe what a law is.
  2. A formal definition of each of Newton's first three Laws of Motion.
  3. Explanations of the laws in your own words.
  4. A visual representation of each law. These might be pictures, movies, animations, experiments, posters or any other way that you can present the laws so that the jury will have a better understanding of them.
  5. At least two real world examples of each law in action or being enforced.
  6. A demonstration or experiment that helps the jury better understand each law.
  7. Please provide any other information about the laws that you think would help the jury come to the conclusion that Newton's Laws are indeed laws.

Remember, to win the case and keep Newton from being executed, you must prove that Newton's Laws of Motion are indeed laws and not the scurrilous and lewd philosophical speculation of a nut.

The first thing you must do in preparation for your defense is to learn all that you can about Newton's Laws of Motion. The SCMME has provided you with several web sites that can help you research the laws in question.
