POETRY FROM AROUND THE WORLD
We've learned how to write Irish limerics, inner-city raps, Japanese Haiku and Tanka poems, American rap and folk songs, and traditional quatrains/cinquains.
Although we've covered a variey of cultures, there are many areas of the world that we have not yet discussed. So, let's travel around the world and learn about a few other forms of poetry!
Pick a continent or geographical region.
Use a variety of resources to find samples of different types of poems from your region.
Type out samples of poems from your area - include the title and author.
Include appropriate illustrations.
Select one style of poetry. Tell what it is called, define it, tell where it originated, show where that area is on a world map, give names of poets who use the technique, tell why this particular form of poetry developed.
Poetry is used to reflect people, their lifestyles, experiences, dreams, feelings, ideals, and ideas. Think about the style of poetry that you discovered. What are the similarities/differences from the peoms you have been writing? Compare and contrast your area's type of poetry with one of the forms that we studied.
